Studio BTS by Ryan Harltey
I’m releasing a new single, “Snapping Turtle,” next Wednesday, May 14.
During the recording of Planting by the Signs, I had my talented friend Ryan Hartley film the entire studio process. Before I left for our Australian tour, I had him bounce all the files to a hard drive so that I could look over the footage during my downtime. Let me just say this, EXCRUCIATING! Hours and hours and hours of the recording process that an artist HAS TO black out in order to get something done. Recording music, and honestly anything around being a touring musician, is mostly waiting for something, which was what I found in most of the footage.
Here is a behind the scenes look into the making of “Snapping Turtle.” If you feel like you are trapped in the land of people noodling while hearing nothing but a drum loop - welcome to the recording process. It’s having a sneak peek into a GROUP ASSIGNMENT from the 7th grade.
Now, I know I just made that sound horrible. It is both horrible and amazing. This short video doesn’t allow you to hear what the song amounts to in the end, but you can see it all coming together, which is the amazing part. That is the magic of recording, when you are on the chase and you hear the dogs barking ahead of you because they are on the trail of the song. For those of you that I lost with that last sentence, that is exactly what recording music is–a dark night of coon hunting.
There we all were, not able to see much, but following the trail of a sound. No matter how long the journey, we just kept our ears perked and picked up our feet towards that distant clue that we were onto something.
This is a little snippet of what was going on before we found a song. I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to releasing my single, “Snapping Turtle,” soon.
Hate to leave good company,
SG
As someone born in Paris, but raised in Murray, I totally agree. :-)
